How to retain your volunteers

The volunteers in your organisation are invaluable, and you wouldn’t be able to do what you do without them. Follow these tips keep them onside.

1

Reward and recognition. How can you make your volunteers feel valued and appreciated? The fact is, if your volunteers feel undervalued they won’t stick with you. Create bi-annual award ceremonies to thank volunteers who have gone above and beyond, send birthday cards, and remember to just say ‘Thank you!’

2

Ask for their opinion. Make sure your volunteers feel involved in the government of the organisation they work for. Hold monthly meetings with your volunteers, ask for their thoughts and feelings in big decisions.

3

Ensure they have the support they need. Each volunteer should have a dedicated manager, who is their first point of contact for their every need and requirement. If volunteers don’t feel supported, they will walk away.

4

One of the main reasons volunteers decide to volunteer in the first place is to socialise with like-minded people. Give your volunteers the opportunity to meet and chat with each other. Organise meals out and day trips – ask your volunteers what they want to do.

5

Give your volunteers the opportunity to take on extra responsibility if they want it. Is there a job in your organisation which could be done by a volunteer who would love the challenge?

Further information

If you do all of the above, you are well on your way to keeping your volunteers with your organisation in this competitive environment.
