fundraising for non-profit community theatre group

Posted by Laura Jury at Mar 11, 2011 07:06 PM

Hi, I am secretary for a small non profit  community theatre group based in Brixham, Devon, and am investigating methods of fundraising, both one offs and longer term ideas. We are very small, although last Sept we won an award for "creativity in the community" and have been going since 2005. Our main foci are

- to promote history, especially local history.

- to bring theatre to all kinds of venues - we perform anywhere from the street through to standard theatres when possible.

- to help people aged 16+ develop thier communication and interpersonal skills through working on a theatre show.

- to support other community festivals and events by putting on shows for them.

- To enourage people to experience theatre through low ticket prices (or free/ donation buckets, if street theatre with relevant permissions, obviously )

We mainly perform in Torbay, the furthest away we have been to date are Exeter, Exmouth and Plymouth.

So far we have (besides ticket sales or donation buckets - depending on show) relied on extra income from jumble sales, programme advertising space, and  are investigating using some online auctions for fundraising on ebay and ebid, quiz nights, etc.

I was wondering, however, if you had other suggestions for fundraising. Most of the core members of the group also work/ study/volunteer (or any combination of those three) full time, and run this of evenings and spare time, so something like taking three months to so a sponsored walk across the Sahara or getting a second job to pay for the group (suggestions I was given elsewhere!!!) are a bit impractical!

Suggestions can be places for grants, or ideas for fundraising in general. :) Thanks for all serious suggestions. :)

hi there, here are some links you might find useful.

Can anyone from similar organisations share fundraising ideas which have worked for them?

Hi again, I posted your marketing and fundraising question on our LinkedIn community and had a response from Wendy at CVA Torbay. She said that she is "happy to circulate any requests via our network for them". Also wanted you know that they've just appointed a community fundraiser to the team. Here is a snippit from their press release:

"CVA Torbay and the Torbay Community Partnerships are delighted to announce the recent appointment of Robin Causley to the new position of Community Fundraiser. "I look forward to working with the voluntary and community sector in Torbay and hope that by working together we can ensure that the essential role that the sector plays in the Bay is further developed and sustained”
Robin can be contacted at the CVA Torbay offices on 01803 212638 and his email address is robin@cvatorbay.org.uk"

Hi there,

If you're looking for fundraising ideas theres a site called savepatches.com that allows people to stream a charity event straight on their website that people can watch and donate through the site. Perhaps you could stream your plays and stuff on their site? just an idea.

good luck.

Hey,

Do you have a logo for your theatre company? There's a website called funditbynet that lets you sell stuff with your logo on without having to buy loads of stock in because they help you advertise it first with posters where you can see the product and get all the money before you order from them. If you don't have a logo they can make one for you so it might be a good way to promote yourselves too, they have loads of different stuff on there,

Hope this helps!
