I am the trustee of a registered charity in the UK. I have asked the Charity Commission if we can register as an NGO in the UK as well. The commission told me that we would have to set up a seperate organisation and register it as an NGO, but didn't know who manages such registrations or where I can go for advice. Can anyone help?

Marie Faulkner on Sep 06, 2013 05:06 PMUnfortunately we do not have any content of this sort on the KnowHow NonProfit site. However I can signpost you to the Charity Commission's page on registering an international charity or overseas disaster appeal.

I specialise in this topic. Setting up an NGO branch in the UK isn't difficult, but you will need people in the UK to manage it. You can have trustees outside the UK, but to open your bank accounts you'll need UK signatories. Plus you will need Board members with UK addresses to administer correspondence with the Charity Commission (when you get to that stage) and deal with banking.
If you've got connections in the UK and you're looking to take that forward, I run consultancy/advice and a charity start-up package: http://mariongrace.co.uk/ Happy to have an initial discussion about it to make sure you're ready.
Or you can find everything you need online via places like the Charity Commission website and NVCO.
All the best,
